GREENLAND—THE LAND OF
SNOW
Greenland is the largest island in the world and the second largest ice
sheet. It is located between the Arctic and the North Atlantic Oceans. It means
that Greenland is surrounded principally by cold ocean currents, so the coasts
are constantly being cooled.
According to Greenland location, the Atlantic Ocean lies in the
southwest of Greenland. Greenland borders the east, the Arctic Ocean is to the
North and the Baffin Bay is to the West. The total are of Greenland is 21,
66,085 km. About 17, 55,617 km is covered by ice sheet. Huge pieces of ice
sheet frequently break off and float in the sea. They are called icebergs. They pose great danger to
ships in the sea.
The northern most tip of Greenland is nearly 650 km from the North
Pole. Greenland is a part of Denmark. Its capital is Nuuk, earlier called
Godthab.
