A PEEP INTO THE PAST
A PEEP INTO THE PAST
History is the story of man from the very beginning to the present day.
If you break up the word ‘HISTORY’, you get ‘HIS’ ‘STORY’. History is
therefore, man’s story --- fascinating stories of actual men and what happened
to them in reality.
History tells us about the lives of many great men, the battles they
fought and the land they conquered. It also tells us about how man lived many
years ago, the food he ate, the cloths he wore, the tools he used and the
cities he built.
All the happenings of recent times have come to us from books.
Thousands of years ago, before the invention of paper and printing, man wrote
on stone, bark of trees, palm leaves, metal plates and also on the walls of
caves.
We have also procured
information of man’s life before he knew the art of writing. This is by way of
pots, pans, jewellery, weapons, coins and many other objects which have been
dug out from beneath the ground. Brick remnants of complete cities have also
been dug out!
Dates and events in history are very important. Therefore, you must be
aware of the period when certain events took place.
Many types of stone weapons and implements were found in several parts
of India to show that man lived nearly 17, 00,000 years ago. Historians refer
to them as Old Stone Age man or man who lived in the Paleolithic Age. As man
began to progress and lead a settled life, he came to be known as the New Stone
Age man, or that of the Neolithic Age.
Historical dates are calculated from the year of the birth of Jesus
Christ. Therefore, you will find the letters B.C. and A.D. written after or
before dates. For example, 10,000 BC or 1512 AD. BC stands for – ‘Before
Christ’ and AD for ‘Anno Domini’ or, ‘in the year of lord’.
As man discovered the use of various metals, he progressed further, and
with each new discovery, a new Age was recorded in history. Thus, we have the
Bronze Age and the Iron Age.
