LIFE OF THE PEOPLE IN GREENLAND
Greenland is the largest island with 57,000population. The people of
Greenland are very peaceful. They have never waged war with anyone and people
generally show great openness to visitors. The Greenlanders are predominantly
Inuit or Eskimos who migrated to Greenland from Canada. It has been a colony of
Denmark. So the lifestyle of the people is a mixture of indigenous tradition as
well as modern ways. Evangelical Lutheran is the religion of the people of Greenland.
Among the ethnic groups of Greenland, 88% of the people are Greenlanders and
12% are Danish and others. More than 90% of the people in Greenland reside in
the west coast of Greenland.
The Eskimos are short with flat faces and narrow black eyes. Their skin
is copper yellow in colour. They wear cloths made from the skin and fur of
animals. They generally wear double trousers and high boots which is made of
seal skin. The Eskimos still use dog-sledge for hunting. They built and use
their own boats called Kayak for fishing.
These Eskimos live in the extreme north and build snow-houses during
the winter season. These snow houses are made of blocks of ice.
However, to the
Inuits or Eskimos ‘Igloo’ means a house, weather it is made of ice-bricks,
wood, stone or animal skin. In the summer season, they live in skin tents,
called tou pigs.
