Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra. It was earlier known as Bombay.
The city is situated on the west coast of India. It faces the Arabian Sea.
Mumbai is a major port. There are many industries in Mumbai. Many mills make
cloth. Some industries make medicines, oils, chemicals and electrical goods.
Many people work in these industries. Mineral oil is found in the seabed near
the Mumbai Coast. This place is called Bombay High. Oil found here is refined
in a refinery. People living in Mumbai speak Marathi, Hindi, English and
Konkani. The popular snacks are bhelpuri, vada pav, Pani Puri and pav bhaji. Ganesh
Chaturthi is the most popular festival celebrated. However, all Indian
festivals like Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, Navroz and Pongal are also
celebrated. Thousands of tourists visit Mumbai every year. The most famous
tourist spot is the Gateway of India. Other places of tourist interest are
Kamla Nehru Park, Jahangir Art Gallery, Taraporevala Aquarium, Marne Drive and
the popular Essel World. Mumbai is also famous for its beaches such as
Chaupati, Juhu, Marve and Versova. The best view of this lovely city can be had
from the Malabar Hills. The shining lights at night, along the Marine Drive,
look like a beautiful necklace. This stretch is also called the Queen’s
Necklace. The first train in India ran
from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. Today, Mumbai has one of the best public
transport systems in India. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai is one
of the busiest railway stations in India. This station is also known as CST or
Bombay VT.
