About two-thirds of the Earth is covered with water. As the Moon revolves around the Earth, it seems to pull the Earth’s water towards it. This leads to rise and fall in the level of water in some places. This phenomenon is known as a tide. There are two types of tides – the high tide and the low tide.

Tidal island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaAs the Moon is close to Earth, the effect of its gravity can be felt on Earth. The water present in the water bodies on the side of the Earth facing the Moon, are attracted upwards causing high tide. The same also happens on the opposite side Earth. In the region between the two high tides, the water level falls and forms low tides. The rotation of the Earth causes two tides every day. Approximately, every twelve and half hours there is one high tide followed by one low tide.
