KALIDASA - THE GREAT POET
KALIDASA
Mahakavi Kalidasa is
considered as one of the greatest Sanskrit poets and dramatists of India. He was
one of the so-called nine gems of Vikramaditya’s court in Ujjain.
Kalidasa wrote seven plays.
‘Malavika Gnimitra’, Vikramorvahiya’ and ‘Abhijana Shakuntalam’ are his celebrated
plays. The play ‘Abhijana Shakuntalam’ is based on the events and characters
taken from the Mahabharata. It is a famous play not only in India but
throughout the world and was the first of his plays to have been translated
into English and German.
Kalidasa is also known for
his famous poems. ‘Kumarasambhava’ and ‘Raghuvamsha’ are his two epic poems and
‘Meghaduta’ and ‘Ritusamhara’ are lyrical poems.
