Decorations and Medals

> In the 4th century, Alexander the great gave a 'golden button' as an honorary award to one of his kinsmen. This is the first mention in recorded history of a 'medal'.
 
> In ancient Greece and Rome, acts of bravely and merit were acknowledged by placing a 'laurel wreath'  on the head of the victor, like a crown.
 
> Medals are also awarded in sports as in the Olympics, or for outstanding work in any field. A medal is also part of the Nobel Prize.
 
> Medals and decorations are given to members of the Armed Forces for acts of bravery, outstanding service, or for taking par in a war.
 
> The Param Vir Chakra is an Indian Military Decoration given for valour in combat operations. It is India's highest military honour. It is also referred to as PVC.
 
> The Param Vir Chakra is the highest gallantry award for officers and other enlisted personnel of all military branches of India for highest degree of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy. It is also awarded posthumously and indeed, most of the awards have been posthumous.
 
> The Victoria Cross (Vc) is the highest recognition for valour "in the face of the enemy" that can be awarded to members of the British and Commonwealth Armed Forces of any rank in any service, and civilians under military command. It is also the highest award on the British Honours Systems.
