Elephants are huge animals, which mean they
produce a lot of body heat. Since they typically live in very hot climates,
it’s essential that they have a very efficient way to get rid of their extra
body heat. Their big, floppy ears provide them help.

The inside of an elephant’s ear has tiny blood vessels. Skin of the ear
is very thin, and blood vessels are very close to the surface.

As the temperature of its blood is greater than the temperature of its
surroundings, heat is released from the ears.
·
In order to get rid of the heat, elephants flap their ears back and
forth, and create a light breeze that can speed up the cooling process.
An elephant’s ear can cool its body by up to 5o Celsius (that’s 90 Fahrenheit)!
